LASSUS PRESENTS AWARD TO MURIEL SIEBERT
Washington, DC – The Center for Women’s Business Research presented its 2004 Woman Business Owner Leading by Example Award to Muriel Siebert, Founder, Chairwoman and President of Muriel Siebert & Company, Inc., at the Center’s 10th Annual Executive Roundtable on April 28 in New York City.
The Center established the Leading by Example Award in 2003 to recognize individuals or organizations that are increasing the possibilities for women business owners. The winners of this award set the standard for others by demonstrating the courage and leadership to be a role model for other women. The first award was presented last year to the U.S. Secretary of Labor, Elaine L. Chao.
“Muriel Siebert has been called the ‘First Woman of Finance’,” said Diahann W. Lassus, CFP®, CPA, President of Lassus Wherley & Associates and treasurer, Center for Women’s Business Research, who presented the award. “She opened up avenues for women to be leaders as business owners, corporate executives, and government officials.” Ms. Siebert was the first woman to own a seat on the New York Stock Exchange, the first woman to head one of its member firms, and the first woman Superintendent of Banking for the State of New York. Muriel Siebert & Company, Inc., is a discount brokerage firm with branches in New York City, Jersey City, Beverly Hills, and Boca Raton, Naples, Palm Beach, and Surfside. The company has over 100 employees, with revenues over $25 million in 2003.
In 1998, through the Muriel F. Siebert Foundation, Ms. Siebert initiated a program to teach New York City high school students about checking accounts and the use/abuse of credit cards. To meet the newly-approved New York State standards for the teaching of economics, the enterprise system and finance, her new “Personal Finance Program: Taking Control of Your Financial Future” has been approved by the New York City Department of Education for introduction into the required economics courses for high school seniors. The course covers money, banking, credit, budgeting, taxes, insurance, and investing, among other topics.
“As I learned at the Banking Department,” said Ms. Siebert, “people who have less often pay more for everything because they do not know how money works. With this program, I hope to level the playing field.”
The Center for Women’s Business Research congratulates and thanks Muriel Siebert for all of her contributions to unleashing the economic potential of women entrepreneurs and high school students.
