Independent Press: November 1, 2000

Lassus Wherley & Associates of New Providence recently announced their sponsorship of Megan Sooy, a young member of the U.S. Disabled Sports Team, during a luncheon in her honor.

Meghan was selected as a participant in the "Women Winners" Travel and Training Program that was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Women Business Owners and Lucent Technologies to sponsor young women for the U.S. Disabled Sports Team.

Diahann W. Lassus, president of Lassus Wherley, presented a special "Breaking the Barriers" Glass Ceiling Pin to Meghan in recognition of her accomplishments.

"Meghan is truly an inspiration to us all!", stated Ms. Lassus.

At birth, Meghan was diagnosed with cerebral palsy due to lack of oxygen.  She was forced to walk with crutches and periodically uses a wheelchair.

Nevertheless, her passion for sports and desire to overcome her physical limitations paved the way for a future of remarkable accomplishments.

On April 14, 1996, she joined her first wheelchair track and field team, the Lightning Wheels.

Meghan continued to go to many regional track meets, and participated in the Bennett Victory games in June of 1997, where she broke national records in the 200 meter and 800 meter races.

In 1998, Meghan competed in the Windsor Indoor Wheelchair classic in Canada, and qualified for her first appearance at the Wheelchair Sports U.S.A. Junior National.

At the Junior Nationals, Meghan took home six gold medals and one silver medal in various events, setting new national records in each of her six gold medal events.

Meghan resides with her parents in Cologne, NJ, and is currently a sophomore at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, where she majors in Rehabilitation Services.  She is training for the Para-Olympic games in Greece in 2004.
